Think Smart: How to Break Free from Inferior Thinking

Have you ever caught yourself thinking these thoughts? I’m not smart enough. I’m not qualified enough. Nobody in my family has ever done this before. Maybe this is just my lot in life.

Sometimes we live with certain thoughts for so long that we stop recognizing them as thoughts. They become conclusions about who we are and what is possible for our lives.

But God never intended for us to live from an inferior mindset.

In First Corinthians 15:34, the Message translation says, “Think straight.” That’s a simple instruction, but it carries a powerful truth: how we think matters! If we want to experience the life Jesus has made available to us, we must learn to think in agreement with what He has already accomplished.

You Are Not Who You Used to Be

Inferior thinking often keeps us focused on an outdated version of ourselves.

We think about where we came from. We remember what someone said about us years ago. We rehearse our failures and limitations. We allow our gender, race, background, upbringing, or other people’s expectations to determine what we believe we can become.

But the resurrection changed everything.

Romans 6 reminds us that our old way of life was crucified with Christ. The person we once were does not have the authority to dictate who we are today.

Second Corinthians 3:18 describes a transformation that takes place as we behold the Lord. Our lives are progressively changed as we become more like Him. The Holy Spirit is continually leading us away from inferior thinking and into an awareness of our authentic identity in Christ.

That means you don’t have to keep agreeing with an old version of yourself when God is showing you something new.

Stop Thinking Like the Ugly Duckling

Remember the story of the ugly duckling?

For much of the story, the “ugly duckling” believes he is something he was never actually created to be. In reality, he is a beautiful swan. His design was there all along, he simply didn’t recognize it.

We can do the same thing spiritually.

You can be redeemed, equipped, valuable, loved, and made righteous in Christ while continuing to think, I’m not enough. I could never do that. Nothing good ever happens for people like me.

How long will the beautiful swan live like an ugly duckling simply because it hasn’t awakened to the truth of its design?

God did not redeem a compromised version of you. In Christ, He has revealed the real you.

The question is: Will your thinking agree with His?

Stay in the Mirror

James 1:23–25 compares the Word of God to a mirror. A person who hears the Word but doesn’t act on it is like someone who looks into a mirror, walks away, and immediately forgets what he saw.

That is why we have to stay in the mirror of God’s Word. Life will give you plenty of opportunities to forget.

A disappointment may whisper that you’re a failure. Someone’s criticism may cause you to question your worth. A closed door may make you wonder whether you were ever qualified in the first place.

But instead of allowing those circumstances to define you, return to what God says.

When your thoughts say, I’m not capable, remember that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.

When your thoughts say, I have nothing to offer, remember that God created you with purpose.

When your thoughts remind you of everything you’ve done wrong, remember that you are a new creation in Christ.

Romans 12:2 tells us that transformation happens through the renewing of our minds. We replace inferior thoughts with God’s thoughts until His perspective becomes our perspective.

Think Smart—and Then Act

Renewing your mind isn’t simply about thinking more positively. It’s about thinking in agreement with God. And eventually, right thinking should lead to right action.

James describes the person who stays with God’s Word as a man or woman of action. When you know who you are, you can begin showing up differently. You stop allowing fear to make your decisions. You stop shrinking because someone else underestimated you. You stop treating yesterday’s limitations as today’s boundaries.

There is a reason you are here at this particular time. God has a purpose for your life, and you have an assignment to fulfill.

So when inferior thinking tries to return, recognize it for what it is. Don’t allow an old mindset to become your identity.

Take a Moment to Reflect

Before you move on with your day, take a few minutes to consider where your thinking may need to come into greater agreement with what God says about you.

  • What is one limiting or inferior thought about yourself that you’ve believed for so long that it has started to feel like truth?
  • What does God’s Word say about who you are in Christ that challenges or replaces that thought?
  • If you truly believed what God says about you, what is one action you would take differently this week?

Stay in the Word. Renew your mind. Remember who you are.

Think smart! And live from the truth of who God says you are.
